From The Archives: Grumman Gulfstream Makes First Flight

On the cover of the 25 August 1958 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology is an image of the Grumman Gulfstream performing its first flight.

The event marked the return of Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. to commercial field after a lapse of almost seven years.

Last entry was Grumman Mallard amphibian, halted at the outbreak of the Korean War.

This Gulfstream aircraft has a range of 2,200 mi. and would begin Civil Aeronautics Administration certification tests soon after its first flight.

The pressurized aircraft was designed to operate from runways under 4,000 ft. and its fail-safe design is based on fatigue life of 25 years. The company has 27 orders for the aircraft and the first will be delivered in 1959.
