From The Archives: Flying The Gulfstream 5

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. delivered at least nine G5s to completion centers through the first quarter of 1997. The ultra-long-range business jet is powered by two BMW Rolls-Royce BR710 engines.

Editor-in-Chief David M. North boarded the number 505 Gulfstream 5 with John O'Meara, deputy director of flight test operations for the Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. prior to a 1.7-hour evaluation from the company's headquarters in Savannah, Ga. During the flight, the maximum altitude reached was 15,000 ft. and maximum speed was Mach 0.88. 

The price of a G5 was $35 million - in 1997.
